MOA: Minute of Angle

What is Minute of Angle?

Knowing the ballistic characteristics and capabilities of the firearm you’re shooting is critical not only to bench shooters but hunter’s as well. When considering that the kill zone on a whitetail is 14-16”, confidence in your abilities and accuracy of your rifle are paramount. The term Minute of Angle (MOA) is used to describe the accuracy and performance of a rifle and the matched ammunition. While you can find many explanations of MOA on the web and in shooting magazines, we’ll break it down to its simplest form below.

MOA - In order for a rifle to be considered MOA it must shoot a 3 shot group in an inch or less at 100 yards. At Thompson/Center, we shoot every ICON rifle before it leaves the factory and print out the results on a certified target. That target accompanies the rifle so a buyer knows exactly how that rifle will perform and what ammunition we used to certify it with.

Sub-MOA and 1/2 MOA - Several of the models of T/C ICON rifles are certified Sub or ½ MOA. The ICON Precision Hunter is certified to shoot 3 shots under an inch at 100 Yards (must group less than an inch). The ICON Warlord will deliver 3 shots in a half-inch or less at 100 yards.

MOA at distance - a rule of thumb for MOA is that if a rifle shoots MOA at 100 yards, the target group is equally proportionate as the distance increases, for example, MOA at 200 yards is 3 shots in 2” groups, 3” groups at 300 yards and so on.
