I was hunting as the sub-permittee on my friend Dave Arsenault’s permit in an area Northwest of Moosehead Lake. He was lucky enough to draw a permit for an area we deer hunt in every fall so we were quit familiar with the woods.

Opening day came and we went to a spot we had picked out to start our hunt. Rain was falling and even though the legal shooting hour had come we waited another ½ hour before calling to allow us better visibility.

We called off and on for about 20 minutes when we noticed a bull had come up to the edge of an old skidder trail. It seemed like it took forever for him to step into a shooting lane that would offer a clean shot and when he did I fired.

He dropped right on the spot. I had to touch him before it sank in that we had actually got such a fine animal!

A funny note to this story is that we got him at 7:20 am and he weighed in at 720lbs.
