My name is Mitchell age 12 and I have been hunting with my dad and grandfather for a few years around NH. My grandfather was able to buy me a youth cow elk muzzleloader hunt at the double H ranch in New Mexico from an RMEF auction.
We began to plan our trip and my hunt for a cow elk. We started with a T/C Pro Hunter 209X50 muzzleloader and began shooting it on a regular basis so I would be ready if I got the oportunity.
On our arrival to NM they were calling for snow and high winds but that didn't dampen my spirits. The first day we woke up to eight inches of fresh snow and heavy wind. We were able to get out on day two and make an unsuccesful stalk.
Day three we were scouting again but today was sunny and no wind. Before lunch we found a group of elk that we could get on. My guide Royce and I got to within 100 yards while my dad and grandfather hung back and waited for the shot. I got one opportunity and took my shot. I made contact and she dropped where she stood, my first harvest.
