It was the 7th day of the hunt and just after a storm that left several inches of snow on the ground. I left camp and headed up one canyon but some friend had gone up that canyon before I could get there.

So I went up on the ridge and soon came across the tracks of 3 elk. I started to follow them and had just dropped down and through one draw and up to the ridge when I got a glimpse of them. I had a hurried shot with my Encore muzzleloader and missed but it didn't spook the elk. They just wandered up over the ridge and headed up toward the top of the mountain staying below the ridge line.

I continued to track them, when towards the top something told me to look up. When I did I saw one of the elk standing in the trees approximately 100 yards up the hill. All I could see of him was patches of hair and antler. So I got a steady rest and took aim and shot. He went down and rolled down the hill aways.

When I got over looking at him I had hit him in the neck breaking his neck. Preliminary score shows he should score in the 330s. Like I said earlier I was using my T/C Arms Encore Pro-hunter Endeavor with open sites, 100 grains of pyrodex pellets and a Barnes Tripple Shock 290 grain T-EZ bullet.
