It was October of 2010 in the Mountains of New Mexico that found me and a couple of friends on our first bear hunt. Having never been on a bear hunt I decided I would go just to check it out and who knows maybe even get lucky.
We were using dogs to locate the bears and then the race was on. The terrain we were in was either straight up or straight down and once the dogs found a trail you found out quickly that you had not exercised enough for this hunt. It was an awesome experience and the adrenalin kicked into high gear so following the dogs at a decent pace was possible.
We were looking for boars only and once they are up in the tree after being bayed it becomes very difficult to confirm. We all got our bears and two of us used Thompson Pro Hunter's SS chambered in 270 Winchester. One well placed shot with another just to be on the safe side was all it took to anchor the bruin which fell to the ground a lifeless ball of fur.
If you are looking for a great hunt try this one!!!
