Let’s face it, we all like getting new gear. Those of us who hunt turkeys aren’t any different. A new season means a fresh perspective on what you’ll be bringing out in the woods to chase down those gobblers. We’ve done some of the heavy lifting for you and laid out what we think are the top five items you’ll need to have going into turkey season.
#1 – Turkey Vest
Carry your calls, ammo, and other things out to your spot with your arms free. Turkey vests let you stay organized in the field and give you easy access to what you need quickly. They’re light and not very bulky so if you’re on the move this is an easy way to up your chances of success.
#2 – Turkey Calls
You’ll have a couple options but Phil Rawlings, Director of Sales, recommends you go with a mouth call or slate call. Consider carrying a couple backups in the field because it always pays to be prepared for that “just in case”. Not only is it important to have the call, but it’s equally important to know how and when to use it. Phil gives you his tips on when to call at those birds.
#3 – Binoculars
Save some time and effort on the hunt. Binoculars let you get those long sightlines so you can plan your next move.
#4 – Decoys
Not always necessary, but decoys can be a good tactic to help bring a wary gobbler into range. Think about how you’ll be hunting that day and how a decoy will come into play. With your strategy laid out, pick the right style of decoy that will give you the best opportunity to get a bird.
#5 – Thompson/Center Pro Hunter Turkey Shotgun
You’ve done everything right up to this point and lured that gobbler into shooting range. The last thing you want to be worried about is your firearm, and that’s where the Thompson/Center Pro Hunter Turkey gun comes into play.
